Equipment

  • Skillet

Ingredients

For the Bread

  • 4 slices Sourdough Bread Substitute with whole grain or gluten-free bread for variety.

For the Filling

  • 8 oz Sharp Cheddar Cheese Feel free to substitute with Gouda for a creamier experience.
  • 1 medium Pear Thinly sliced; canned pears can work in a pinch.
  • 1 medium Apple Thinly sliced; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best.
  • 1 medium Onion Thinly sliced; can use store-bought caramelized onions if time is short.

For Cooking & Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoon Unsalted Butter Replace with olive oil for a dairy-free option.
  • 1 tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar Apple cider vinegar or a splash of lemon juice can be great alternatives.
  • Salt to taste
  • Black Pepper Use freshly cracked pepper for the best results.

Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Begin by placing a skillet over medium heat and adding 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Allow the butter to melt completely, coating the bottom of the skillet, and watch for it to bubble gently. This should take about 1 minute.
  • Add the thinly sliced onions to the skillet, stirring them gently to coat with the melted butter. Cook for about 10 minutes until they turn golden brown and become soft and sweet. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, layer two slices of sourdough bread. Start by adding a generous portion of shredded sharp cheddar cheese on each slice, followed by the thin slices of pear, apple, and caramelized onions. Top with another slice of bread.
  • Return the sandwich to the skillet and cook on medium heat for about 4-5 minutes, or until the bottom is golden brown and the cheese is melting. Flip carefully using a spatula.
  • After flipping, cook for another 4-5 minutes until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted. Remove from the skillet and let it rest before slicing.
  • Slice the sandwich in half to reveal the layers and serve immediately while warm. Enjoy!

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor. Monitor the heat closely to prevent burning, and layer enough cheese to hold the fillings together.
