Ingredients
  

Buttercream Ingredients

  • 1 cup salted butter cold (2 sticks)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4–5 cups powdered sugar measured then sifted
  • 1–3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk as needed

Instructions
 

Frosting Instructions

  • In a stand mixer with paddle attachment, whip butter for 2–5 minutes until smooth and creamy
  • Scrape sides and beat another 5 minutes for extra fluffiness, then add vanilla and mix
  • Slowly add 2 cups powdered sugar and mix until combined
  • Add remaining sugar one cup at a time, mixing continuously
  • Add 1–2 tablespoons cream as needed to reach desired consistency
  • Beat on low speed for a few minutes until light and airy
  • Stir with spatula, then frost as desired

Notes

Piping: Frosts 12–15 cupcakes. Spreading: Frosts about 24 cupcakes. Store at room temperature up to 48 hours. Refrigerate if storing longer and let soften before use. Freeze in airtight container and thaw overnight in refrigerator.
