Equipment

  • oven
  • Baking sheet
  • rolling pin
  • Sharp Knife

Ingredients

Puff Pastry Mixture

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen, approximately 17.3 oz)
  • 8 oz sliced ham (preferably thinly sliced)
  • 8 oz sliced cheese (Swiss, cheddar, or your choice)
  • 1 large egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional, for an added flavor kick)
  • ½ cup honey
  • ¼ cup Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional for tanginess)
  • salt (to taste)

Instructions

Cooking Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to smooth out any creases, aiming for a rectangle of about 12×15 inches.
  • Layer the thinly sliced ham evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Place the slices of cheese on top of the ham in a single layer.
  • If using, spread the Dijon mustard evenly over the cheese for added flavor.
  • Sprinkle some freshly ground black pepper over the top to your liking.
  • Starting from one edge, carefully roll the pastry tightly into a log.
  • Once rolled, use a sharp knife to slice the log into 1-inch thick rounds, yielding about 12-15 pinwheels.
  • Lay the pinwheels cut side up on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Brush the tops of the pinwheels with the beaten egg.
  • Bake in your preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the pinwheels are puffed up and golden brown.
  • Once baked, remove from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

These pinwheels are best served warm and can be enjoyed with a variety of dips.
